Tools

The following directory lists all sorts of dynamic tools that are available to registered users of Protoglobe.com. Unless otherwise indicated, all of these services are 100% free. No support is available for these applications, however updates regarding problems, improvements and general performance will be posted regularly. These projects are in various stages of development, and may occasionally have glitches or be altogether unavailable.

IU Salary Visualizer

This salary browser tool provides a visual interface to view public information about salaries of Indiana University faculty and full-time staff between 1995 and 2008. The information has been obtained in the form of spreadsheet files from the IU Faculty/Staff Salary Listing that were dumped directly into a database for use by this tool.

College Browser

This map-based College Browser allows you to search for colleges on a map using additional criteria such as cost, type, location and size. If you're logged in as a user, you can also manage a list of favorites and maintain checklists for your applications to schools that interest you.

Guides

Improving on my old guides application, I've developed a new map-based Guides application using the Google Maps API and AJAX. Locations added through this application are saved as 'free-floating' locations in the same database table that holds the old guide places: they're just not associated with any of the guides that you may be managing. You can still manage multiple categories, and there's a photo board for each of the places as in the previous guide. This system just eliminated the clunky text-based guide management interface that it was using before. The search feature is no longer available, but will return when I update the saved guide manager to add city and status fields and make the saved guides editable.

EduWISE

EduWISE stands for 'Educational Web-based Interactive Story Engine. It is an online tool that allows users to compose stories as sets of sequenced pages that present readers with a choice. Creators direct multiple-choice answers to sets much like users may remember in the Choose-your-own-adventure stories that were so successful. Although the tool can be used for any entertaining purpose, it is specifically intended to be used to create fun stories that enable second language learners to read a story, understand their options, and make decisions that affect the outcome of the story, providing a degree of interaction that goes beyond simply reading a static story.

Pages

The Pages application provides users with the ability to create content pages with a custom layout of absolutely-positioned content panes and to style them in any way they like by using a Stylesheets manager. Panels can be dragged and resized directly on the screen, allowing users to visually lay out an absolutely-positioned page by simply clicking and dragging panels into position. In the future, I would like to provide a style management interface, but for now, CSS must be manually coded.

Pictures

The Pictures application allows users to upload and store pictures under custom categories. When uploaded, copies of each picture are automatically thumbnailed for easy browsing later. Pictures stored by the user can be used in a number of other applications on the site, including users' Pages, Weblogs, Guides and more.
